(AP) ? Prosecutors finally have some momentum in their perjury case against Roger Clemens, even if it means dragging in former major leaguer David Segui, a witness who is apparently so reluctant to testify that the judge threatened from the bench: "If he doesn't show up, he'll be arrested like anyone else."

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton indicated Wednesday he was leaning heavily toward allowing prosecutors to call Segui and another witness to counter an overall impression left by Clemens' lawyers during the 6-week-old trial. Segui is expected to say that sometime around 2001 he was told by Clemens' strength coach, Brian McNamee, that McNamee had saved evidence from injections of players to placate a nagging wife.

That would be consistent with McNamee's testimony last week ? that he kept waste from an alleged steroids injection of Clemens in 2001 and stored it in a beer can to soothe things over at home. McNamee's wife, according to McNamee, was concerned that he would become the fall guy if his involvement with drugs-in-baseball were ever exposed.

But there's a catch. Prosecutor Courtney Saleski said Segui, who retired in 2004 after 15 major league seasons, "doesn't want to come" even though he's under subpoena.

Judge Walton's response: "You just tell him if he's under subpoena, he'd better be here." Or else, added the judge, "he'd better be on the run because the marshals will be after him."

Clemens is accused of lying to Congress in 2008 when he said he had never used steroids or human growth hormone, and a trial that appeared to be going so well for the seven-time Cy Young Award winner has this week thrown him a few curveballs. When Clemens' lawyer Rusty Hardin shared a laugh with the judge while fighting an uphill battle against Segui's testimony ? "I don't want to beat a dead horse," Hardin said ? Clemens sat at the defense table and didn't so much as crack a smile.

Essentially, Hardin is paying the price for his three days of aggressive cross-examination of McNamee, who says he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with HGH in 2000. On Monday, the judge ruled that Hardin had opened the door for McNamee to name other players to whom he had supplied HGH, something the defense had fought vigorously to keep from the jury.

Now the government ? and the judge appears to agree ? says that Hardin went too far in trying to build a case that McNamee started making up charges and fabricating evidence against Clemens around 2007 as a way to appease federal agents.

Walton said the jury is left with the impression that "because the government had made these allegations, that he started to give them what they wanted to stay out of harm's way and avoid going to prison."

Segui and Anthony Corso, who was one of McNamee's private workout clients in New York City, could refute that. Corso is expected to testify that he was told by McNamee as early as 2002 that Clemens used HGH and that in 2005 he was told by McNamee about the saved evidence from the 2001 injection.

With the jury out of the courtroom, Hardin tried to argue that the defense has never contended that McNamee made up the beer can evidence recently. Hardin told the judge that McNamee created it to save as a "hole card" as a way to possibly extort money from Clemens one day.

Walton said there was no evidence to support Hardin's contention. The judge added: "If what you're saying is true, then why did you beat on him so much about his desire to appease the government?"

The judge went even further, wondering why McNamee would have fabricated evidence in 2001: "There's no indication that Mr. Clemens did something to him back then that would cause (McNamee) to have a vendetta against Mr. Clemens."

Walton said he would make a definitive ruling on Segui and Corso on Thursday, but he said nothing to indicate that the Clemens team had swayed his thinking.

The only witness during a shortened trial session on Wednesday was Gene Monahan, the longtime head athletic trainer of the New York Yankees. The prosecution used Monahan to try to make its case in some of its lesser charges against Clemens.

One charge is the Clemens obstructed Congress when he said in a deposition that "four or five needles" of the vitamin B12 would be "already lined up ready to go" in the trainers' room after games.

Monahan said the Yankees never did anything of the sort with B12. He did create an interesting mental picture when he told the jury he would sometimes order "team gargles" ? players lining up to gargle medicine to fight off a rash of head colds.

Monahan praised Clemens' work ethic and leadership skills with younger players.

"He was mother duck and there were other ducklings" who would try to emulate the pitcher's demanding fitness routines, Monahan said. He said he never saw any evidence that Clemens was using performance-enhancing drugs.

The government still has up to six witnesses left to call, and the trial's length is causing all sorts of sacrifices. The judge conceded Wednesday that he'll probably have to cancel most of a planned trip to New Orleans in June because the case won't be settled by then.

"You all are going to deny me the opportunity to have some good gumbo," he said.

SEC, FINRA call for Facebook review, pressure builds

(Reuters) - Two top U.S. financial regulators called for a review of the initial public offering of Facebook last week, putting fresh pressure on the company, its embattled lead underwriter and the Nasdaq.

After Friday's nearly flat close and Monday's 11 percent plunge, Facebook shares were down 8 percent at $31.28 in late afternoon trading on heavy volume of 88 million shares. At that price the company has shed more than $17 billion in market capitalization from its $38-per-share offering price last week.

Investors were still shaking their heads over the botched opening trading of Facebook when Reuters reported late Monday that the consumer Internet analyst at lead underwriter Morgan Stanley cut his revenue forecasts for Facebook in the days before the offering, information that may not have reached many investors before the stock was listed.

JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, which were also underwriters on the deal, each revised their estimates during the road show as well, according to sources familiar with the situation.

"The allegations, if true, are a matter of regulatory concern" to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and to the SEC, FINRA's Rick Ketchum told Reuters.

Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro said investors should be confident in investing, but she conceded there were questions to answer.

"I think there is a lot of reason to have confidence in our markets and in the integrity of how they operate, but there are issues that we need to look at specifically with respect to Facebook," she told reporters as she exited a Senate Banking Committee hearing.

STILL OVERVALUED?

With Facebook shares all but impossible to sell short, investors have sought out almost any related vehicle to bet against the social network. Over the past three trading days, prices plunged on two closed-end funds that owned pre-IPO shares. Firsthand Technology Value Fund and GSV Capital Corp both dropped more than 25 percent even though their Facebook holdings make up only a small fraction of assets.

"Until investors can actually short Facebook, they have to keep shorting other things that can give them some sort of proxy for Facebook," said Thomas Vandeventer, manager of the Tocqueville Opportunity Fund, which owns shares of both the battered closed-end funds.

Brokers who over-ordered shares in the expectation that supply would be limited continued to complain they received too much stock to handle and were left in the dark about forecast changes.

One Morgan Stanley Smith Barney adviser also cited the fact that institutional investors received information that retail investors did not, calling it "a huge issue for the entire industry.

"Night and day the institutional clients get things that we don't get. It's a big issue," the adviser said, adding there was surprise within the brokerage that Morgan Stanley, as lead underwriter, had not done more to support the share price.

As bad as the declines have been, though, a view persists that the stock remains overvalued.

Monday's closing price of $34.03 implied a 24 percent annual growth rate for Facebook earnings over the next 10 years -- a rate that would rank above 90 percent of the companies in that industry.

Thomson Reuters Starmine, meanwhile, more conservatively estimates a 10.8 percent annual growth rate -- almost exactly the mean for the technology sector -- which would value the stock at $9.59 a share, a 72 percent discount to its IPO price.

Similarly, the company's price-to-earnings ratio remains lofty, even after the selloff. The $34.03 price implies a forward P/E of 59, compared with Google's 13.3 forward price-to-earnings ratio (for a similar rate of growth).

WEIGHING ON NASDAQ

Besides the pressure on Facebook and on Morgan Stanley, there is also an intense focus on Nasdaq, which has shouldered much of the blame for the trading failures. The exchange has set aside money to compensate customers, but some on Wall Street are warning its ability to snag future big IPOs is at risk.

"It's dreadful for the markets," former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt said of the IPO and its handling by banks and Nasdaq. "It's an event with long-lasting negative implications for an industry that can ill afford this kind of blemish, and the last chapter hasn't been written. Nobody looks good here."

But Nasdaq shareholders gave the company a pass on Tuesday -- at the exchange operator's annual meeting, which only lasted a few minutes, top executives did not get any questions at all on what went wrong with Facebook or what they were doing to correct it.

"While clearly we had mistakes in the Facebook listing, we still want to highlight the fact that it was the largest IPO ever and on Friday of last week, we processed over 570 million shares," Nasdaq Chief Executive Bob Greifeld said at the shareholder meeting.

Defenses notwithstanding, Barry Ritholtz, a widely followed financial blogger and the chief market strategist at Fusion IQ in New York, took all sides -- Facebook, Morgan Stanley and Nasdaq -- to task in the sharpest terms on his blog Tuesday.

"Thus, what we see are a series of bad decisions made by Facebook's executives going back many years. The insiders got greedy, too clever by half, in how they used secondary markets. They picked a bad banker and an awful exchange," Ritholtz said.

Growing like gangbusters, Turkey says Western economies need 'serious reforms'

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday that the US and Europe were not doing enough to resolve the core causes of the global economic slowdown.

The global economy remains deep in crisis and Europe and the United States are doing little to resolve its core causes, Deputy Turkish Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday.

Mr. Babacan, a former foreign minister and Turkey?s point-man for economic policy, said neither the US nor the eurozone countries have yet to deal with the underlying causes of the global economic slowdown: a weak financial sector, weak corporate balance sheets, risky public financial positions.?

Speaking at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Babacan warned that this year will be a year of reckoning for the European Union, and he pointed to the recent collapse of the Dutch government over the budget austerity measures as a harbinger for Europe?s coming fiscal battles.?

?2012 will be test year for European countries,? he said. ?2013 will be test year for American economy. After the elections [the new administration] will find very difficult decisions on the table right away. There has to be serious fiscal adjustment and a medium term plan to deal with the deficit. So far, there is no credible plan to deal with deficit.?

Babacan said developed countries need to undertake serious structural changes including reforming social security and labor markets: ?It is absolutely necessary for serious reforms, especially in many European countries, absolutely necessary and urgent.?

Babacan is a founding member of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s Justice and Development Party and considered a leading member of the ?Neo-Ottomanism? movement, moving Turkey?s foreign policy away from a predominantly Western focus to integration and activism in its immediate neighborhood ??the territories of the former Ottoman Empire.

Babacan contrasted the Western economic turmoil, with Turkey?s booming economy which he said grew at 9.2 percent growth rate in 2010, and 8.5 percent in 2011.

?We entered this crisis with a strong banking system and strong public financial structure. During the crisis when many countries were asking for fiscal stimulus programs.? We followed a very different route. We did just the opposite. We announced fiscal consolidation program. And we overperformed,? he said.

He said Turkey?s economy was far more open than many European countries, which had made Turkish companies more dynamic and more competitive in global markets. And he argued that Turkish growth was more sustainable because he said it didn?t come on the back of government spending, but rather private sector growth.

In the coming years, he said, ?We will have lower growth ??though better than everywhere else in Europe ??but slower than before. Growth is high, but it?s also sustainable growth.?

?Tight fiscal policies will continue, in good days or in bad days,? he said, ?but we don?t believe in economic growth through public spending.?

Islam, democracy, and capitalism

Turkey has shown how Islam and democracy and capitalism can cooexist peacefully, Babacan said.?

?When people observe a functioning example, people are more encouraged to ask for more in their own countries,? he said. ?We have been talking with leaders: Change is coming, you can no longer have a closed regime with an open society ??satellites, social media, the Internet ??you have this kind, this kind of society moving forward and you are running this closed regime, this is not sustainable, this cannot continue.?

?We have advised these leaders to lead this change, or you will be pushed by change anyway,? he said. ?

Babacan addressed several of the long-running disputes in the region, such as the Israeli-Palestinian impasse, the status of the split island of Cyprus, and the violence in neighboring Syria. He said Turkey was strongly supportive of the six-point peace plan pushed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, but he said Turkey was strongly against any sort of military intervention or sending weapons to the embattled Syrian opposition forces.

He also said the Syrian opposition is coalescing into a viable alternative to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

?We need to see visible, verifiable, and indisputable change in the country,? he said. ?The primary responsibility to end the violence will rest with the Syrian regime.?

Bachelor Alum Michelle Money: ?Emily Is 100% In It To Find Love?

money1_wide_squareinset.jpg
Regarded as one of the most talked about TV personalities in Bachelor history, Michelle Money has often been perceived as a villainess. In an exclusive interview with In Touch, the hair and makeup stylist turned reality star reveals how she stripped away her bad girl persona to empower teenage girls (and gives her advice to best pal Emily Maynard as she begins her dramatic Bachelorette journey!).

?My passion is helping women feel confident,? Michelle, who recently teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters to award four underprivileged high school students the ultimate fantasy prom makeover, shares. ?We hear of prom makeover stories, but less about the ones where celebs step in to create the magic themselves... so this was right up my alley.?

While the makeover includes a beauty prep room at NYC?s Roommate Grace hotel, pampering at The Finishing Bar with manicure and pedicure treatments, shoes, accessories, hair and makeup by Michelle, and a dress from K.Borgella's spring/summer 2011 and 2012 collection, Michelle says she also hopes to provide beauty tips and tricks that will enable the four young women to be more confident in their everyday lives.

?Whenever girls come to my salon and ask to look like a certain celebrity I remind them, ?You don?t want to look like her! You want to look like you!?? she says.

And after feeling misunderstood after contending for Brad Womack?s heart on TV, Michelle also shares her advice on what Emily needs to do to get through the drama.

?You just have to stay true to who you are? Things will be manipulated,? she warns. ?If you worry too much about what other people think it will drive you mad.?

Michelle also tells In Touch that Emily struggled with the decision to be the next Bachelorette.

?At the end of the day, Emily wants to find love,? she shares. ?She wants it for Ricki, for herself? why not take this experience and give it a shot??

The Bachelorette premieres tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Octomom to Tanning Mom: You Suck!

Octomom just heard about the New Jersey woman giving her a run for Mother of the Year, Patricia Krentcil, and boy oh boy, is she incredulous!

Nadya Suleman admits that while she is always inclined to give parents the benefit of the doubt ... the now-infamous Tanning Mom needs help.

If not mental help, then some serious parenting classes.

Octomom SulemanTanning Mom Pic

From one amazing parent to another ...

Octomom says she doesn't feel Patricia Krentcil should lose her kid, even though she was recently arrested for taking her little girl tanning.

She does feel, however, that Child Protective Services should step in to give Krentcil some tips on child-rearing. Hard to argue with that.

It's kind of like the pot calling the kettle bronze here. No, Octo hasn't been arrested at any point, but she's messing up 13 more kids than Patty.

In any case, when a woman who's been visited by CPS herself, filed for bankruptcy and started an adult film career (Octomom's porn video debut is slated for later this year) decides to call you out on your mothering skills ... never a good sign.

'Monster sunspot' may foretell powerful solar flares, says NASA

A huge sunspot spanning more than 60,000 miles could erupt, sending high energy radiation into space.

An enormous sunspot group has taken shape on the surface of the sun, hinting that our star may soon start spouting off some powerful storms.

The huge sunspot complex, known as AR 1476, rotated into Earth's view over the weekend. It measures more than 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) across, researchers said. Scientists with NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory mission, a space-based telescope watching the sun, dubbed the solar structure a "monster sunspot" in a Twitter announcement.

AR 1476 is big enough for amateur astronomers with decent equipment to spot from their backyards, weather permitting. (Warning:?Never look at the sun directly with telescopes or the unaided eye. Special filters are required for safe solar viewing to avoid serious eye damage.)?

"With at least four dark cores larger than Earth, AR 1476 sprawls more than 100,000 km from end to end, and makes an easy target for backyard solar telescopes," the website Spaceweather.com reported Monday (May 7).

Sunspots are temporary dark patches on the surface of the sun that are caused by intense magnetic activity. These structures sometimes erupt into?solar flares, which send high-energy radiation streaming into space.

Solar physicists classify flares into three main categories: C, M and X, with C being the least powerful and X the strongest. X-class flares can cause long-lasting radiation storms in Earth's upper atmosphere and trigger radio blackouts. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts in the polar regions and occasional minor radiation storms, while C flares have few noticeable consequences.

AR 1476 has already proven quite active, firing off a number of C flares?over the past few days. And another sunspot group, AR 1471, erupted Monday evening with one that seems?to be an M1, one of the least powerful M flares, according to Spaceweather.com.

Big solar flares are often associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive clouds of solar plasma that streak through space at 3 million mph (5 million kph) or more.?If these clouds hit Earth, they can wreak havoc, spawning geomagnetic storms that can disrupt GPS signals, radio communications and power grids. CMEs also often super-charge the northern and southern lights, providing dazzling shows for skywatchers at high latitudes.

Monday evening's eruption from AR 1471 apparently generated an Earth-directed CME, which should hit Earth sometime Wednesday morning (May 9) Eastern time, researchers said.?

After remaining surprisingly quiet from 2005 through 2010, our star began waking up last year, spouting off numerous powerful flares and CMEs.

Most experts expect such outbursts to continue over the next year or so. Solar activity waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle, and scientists think the current one ? known as Solar Cycle 24 ? will peak in 2013.

Motorola Droid X2 updated with security patch, wireless alerts, and bug fixes

Droid X2

Just because it's not the latest hotness on the Android scene isn't a reason to let the Motorola Droid X2 wither and die on the vine, and Verizon has begun pushing out an update to Big Red's first dual-core phone. It's not a big version bump by any means, but there are a few important changes:

  • Verizon Video and VZ Navigator® 3D City are now preloaded.
  • A Google Security Patch has been added to improve the security level.
  • Purchased ringtones are now able to be saved and set.
  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • Shortcut names can be updated and saved.
  • The keyboard Input Auto Error Correction setting defaults to off.

Granted, few of us really missed not having the 3D version of VZ Navigator, but the security patch is good to have, and the wireless alerting system is an important update -- one that could end up saving your bacon. Of course, bug fixes are always welcome. If you haven't received the update notification yet, check for it via your Droid X settings.

UK based TVCatchup for Android released in beta

Android Central

TVCatchup has been a growing favourite in the UK in the past few years. Initially made popular by offering a web app for the iPhone, natural progression would dictate that the service would also be made compatible with Android devices. The problem -- the web app doesn't always work that well. And, native apps are always better to have. Now, that's what we've got, albeit currently in beta form.

It's a very simple app, but it doesn't need to be complicated. After all, it's for watching TV. All the channels available on the web are present, and as I write this, I'm watching some of The Big Bang Theory using it. The verdict, it's good. The stream quality is excellent, and it's so easy to use it's unreal.

The downside for anyone outside of the UK is that it's not available for you guys. When you open up the app, it checks your service provider and verifies whether or not you're able to make use of it. (Of course, you'll also need a TV License and all that to watch stuff as it's broadcast.)

But, fellow Brits, you can download it here and try it out for yourselves.

Exclusive: Watch A Clip Of Wolfgang Gartner's 'Redline' Video!

Full video premieres Monday on mtvU and Tuesday on MTV Clubland.

" 'Redline,' to me is the ultimate anthem," electronic dance music producer Wolfgang Gartner told MTV News recently. "It's all built around this really simple yet catchy melody, but it's got all the turbo-fueled drops and peaks that are necessary to make a club smash."

With his latest single, the L.A.-based house producer certainly adds another smash to his catalog, which includes hit collabos with Tiësto ("We Own the Night") and Eve ("Get 'Em"). His latest effort also adds a dash of "feel-good" to the party.

"['Redline' has] a bit of a more positive and optimistic feeling about it than a lot of my other stuff, which I like and seems to resonate well with people in that way," Gartner said.

The video for "Redline" will be premiering on mtvU on Monday and MTV Clubland on Tuesday, but MTV News was lucky enough to get an exclusive sneak peek/a> at the new animated clip. It shows WG redlining his grey-and-red race-striped sports car, booking it to a gig in a nearby city. While on the road, he dreams that a section of his car is turning into a spaceship and shooting off into outer space. The teaser clip ends with speaker arms protracting from his spaceship and WG turning up the volume on his spaceship-car mixer. An outer-space party appears to be on the agenda.

The video for "Redline" took almost two weeks to make and was created by New Media DNA with Erica Damier directing and Jose Cubero serving as lead animator.

"The beat was the inspiration for the video," Damier told MTV News. "After brainstorming ideas, we knew there had to be a car involved, since the name of the song is 'Redline,' and it involves the whole concept of redlining a car."

"I loved it!" Gartner gushed. "The sort of caricature look that they gave me, might turn off some people when they accentuate your features. They gave me this massive forehead! But I loved it.

"My manager put it best: 'It's like your own personal Saturday morning cartoon,' " Gartner continued. "And that's totally true. It's like a cartoon starring me, riding in spaceships, and all the big bursts and explosions are timed to the music in a way that really makes it hit."

Wolfgang Gartner's "Redline" video premieres Monday on mtvU and Tuesday at 3 a.m. on MTV CLubland.

How does the "Redline" preview compare to Wolfgang Gartner's "Illmerica" video? Sound off in the comments below, and follow @MTVCLUBLAND for updates on the "Redline" premiere!
