(AP) ? Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is on the witness list for the upcoming Chicago trial of the man accused of killing her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in 2008, according to court documents.

But prosecutors haven't yet disclosed whether Hudson will actually testify at the April 9 trial of William Balfour, who was the estranged husband of Hudson's sister, Julia.

Hudson told investigators that she talked to her mother in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood every day and knew something was wrong when she hadn't heard from her by late in the morning of Oct. 24, 2008, according to the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/A0uDM9 ).

Several hours later, Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, Jason Hudson, 29, were found shot to death in the family's home. The body of her nephew Julian King, who was Julia Hudson's child from a previous relationship, was found days later in a vehicle several miles away. Police recovered a gun from bushes near the vehicle and have linked it to the shootings.

Hudson told investigators she'd known Balfour since childhood and had advised her sister against marrying him. She said the family didn't find out about their 2006 marriage until months after it happened. Prosecutors have argued that Balfour killed the family because he was angry that Julia Hudson was dating another man.

Jennifer Hudson, 30, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls," was in Chicago with her family about five days before the killings. She said she'd last been at the family home about two months earlier.

Tips For Pilots ? Take-Offs in Normal Conditions - Leisure Aviation ...

It seems that no matter whether you are Pilot or passenger the most intense moment of flying is the take offs and landings. These are two areas that student pilots pay particularly close attention to. This doesn?t mean that there can?t be other issues once the plane is in the air, but statistics show most problems occur in take offs and landings. Out of the two, more accidents occur during landing. Interestingly enough though if the accident occurs during take off it appears to be far more serious.

Naturally, the ideal scenario for takeoff is what they call normal conditions. This means there are no cross winds present to be concerned about. A Pilot must constantly be aware of the weather conditions from both the outlook within the plan as well as when outside.

At the start of their take off training student pilots perceive take off as being one continuous maneuvering effect it is but you need to look at the various segments of the take off.

Segment One

The take off roll. Aside of the adrenalin rush you are going to feel in the beginning you have the techniques that you must concentrate on to successfully complete this segment. You will enter into this phase once you have been cleared to enter the runway. Your feet must remain on the rudder pedals but at the same time ensure that there is no pressure on the brakes. From here, you must keep your movements smooth and continuous. You want to avoid any type of jerking movements. So without hesitation engage the throttle without hesitating. Give the plane the power it needs to clear the runway. The length of the runway is there because of your requirements so use all of it. If you are too far forwards, then move the plane back until it is in proper position. Don?t forget you are going to have to offset the torque effect and you will do this by adding right rudder pressure.

You should now be at the point where you are moving down the runway. Once again, smoothly but consistently use your rudder pedals to keep your direction under control. Your airspeed is what will ultimately control your direction but until you reach that point, you need to rely on your nose or tail wheel for that purpose. Never use your brakes to control your steering. The neutral position is where you should find your ailerons in, provided the wind conditions are stable or normal.

You will notice that as your air speed accelerates your elevator and rudder will become more effective in your directional maneuvers. You can enhance this by keeping minimal back pressure on the elevator during this time. These items will only become effective as the air moves over your aircraft. Once all this has been accomplished, it means you have reached your rotation speed. Prior to this point though be sure there is not too much back pressure on the yoke. There is a condition know as ground effect that could cause you to prematurely lift off before you are capable of being airborne. In some instances, you need to remain in ground effect while your airspeed is increasing. Under normal lift off circumstance, utilize what runway is available to you.

Time travel options - Exclusive Travel and Leisure

Layaway a tight budget, as long as the preferred choice for those seeking luxury has been accepted. The traditional retailers such as furniture and white goods supplier, we offer payment by installments. I think the tourism industry is an industry that is not thinking about a recount. A 2008 article in the U.S. Today (?best new fee schedule ?Take) in the rate of vacation options, similar to the mortgage crisis in 2008 suggest that more widespread in tough economic times. In fact, this option is always available . To find out just looking for what you need.

How it works

Travel plans retail installment to work as a lot of options. The options for the tourist chooses the first trip. The hotels, car rental and hotel and round-trip air event passes or tickets can be a complete package of a partial package. The trip is to travel to travelers with the need, planned to finance a certain percentage of the total price. Agency that provides the required rate of output and equal periodic payments to repay the balance of the trip, offers payment plans. Usually occurs within 12 months payment plan, but may vary according to a travel agent, offers the option fee.

Additional advantages

Advance for the license is not the only advantage of a type of holiday. Use this option to end the special prices for those on a budget. Payment plan and the plan was created based on the date of the tour price. Plans hotels, theme parks, hotels and travel agencies and presented by a partner. This is the lowest possible prices at a speed runs to ensure tours. Anyone starting a trip in the car rental companies, airlines concerned to accept the installation plan in the price negotiated at the time. The value of travel increases, the time to pay, is a blessing, especially for travelers. Explorer actually save money by pre-planning and installation.

Limitations

The deadline for payment holidays include deadlines. The 30 to 60 days before departure date must be paid in full. Some plans for an installment payment plan small, less the cancellation and refund money to offer. However, others do not return the initial deposit. All fees are covered by the package. All travelers, such as consumption taxes, insurance, meals, luggage and other charges in addition to pay should be possible under the plan carefully for.

Thought

Booking through an agency or a travel agency, travel packages, not used. Navigation companies, airlines, hotels, theme parks and other time options offered by private organizations looking. You can change the agreement with the airlines, airline tickets, cruise through the line and I plan to get going to take over the area shortly before the trip leave to care for other items. If this is done before the trip better, ?big ticket? items that help pay.

FILE - In this April 21, 2010 photo provided by the U.S. Coast Guard, fire boat response crews spray water on the burning remnants of BP's Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig. The gargantuan legal bill for the 2010 catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is coming due for BP as a federal trial opens Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 to determine the company?s liability for the blowout of its Macondo well. On the cusp of trial, phalanxes of lawyers, company officials and state officials spent the final hours in high-stakes settlement talks that law experts believed could still yield a deal right before the courtroom doors open Monday morning. (AP Photo/US Coast Guard, File)

(AP) ? A judge has delayed the federal trial over the worst U.S. offshore oil disaster by a week, saying Sunday that BP PLC was making some progress in settlement talks with a committee overseeing scores of lawsuits, according to people close to the case.

Two people close to the case told The Associated Press that the decision was made Sunday during a conference call between parties in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill case and U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the call.

They said the judge told those on the call that BP and the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee were "making some progress" in their settlement talks. The steering committee is overseeing lawsuits filed by individuals and businesses following the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20, 2010, in the Gulf. The blast killed 11 workers and injured 17, and led to 206 million gallons (780 million liters) of oil spewing from the blown-out well, soiling miles (kilometers) of coastline.

However, the judge did not mention the status of settlement talks between other parties, nor did he mention any figures being discussed, according to the people close to the case.

The brief order issued by Barbier on Sunday said only that the delay was granted "for reasons of judicial efficiency and to allow the parties to make further progress in their settlement discussions."

Among other things, the trial that is now set to begin March 5 is meant to determine the penalties that need to be paid by BP and other companies involved in the oil spill. Billions of dollars are at stake.

BP and the Plaintiffs Steering Committee confirmed in a joint news release that the trial had been delayed. It said the oil giant and the PSC were working to reach an agreement that would "fairly compensate people and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon accident and oil spill."

"There can be no assurance that these discussions will lead to a settlement agreement," the joint statement said.

Separately, BP has had discussions in recent days with the federal government and cement contractor Halliburton Energy Services Inc., according to several people close to the case.

If no settlement is reached, Barbier will preside over a three-phase trial that could last the better part of a year. The first phase is designed to identify the causes of the deadly blowout and to assign percentages of fault to the companies involved in the ill-fated drilling project.

Financial analysts estimate BP could wind up paying anywhere from $15 billion to $30 billion over the lawsuits, and BP has estimated in regulatory filings that its total liability for the disaster is $40 billion.

An AP analysis found that the company could conceivably face up to $52 billion in environmental fines and compensation if the judge determines the company was grossly negligent.

The trial may not yield major revelations about the causes of the disaster, but the outcome could bring much-needed relief for tens of thousands of people and businesses whose livelihoods were disrupted by the spill.

Relatives of the 11 killed in the Deepwater Horizon blast say they are hoping for something more elusive: justice for lost loved ones.

Sheryl Revette, whose husband, Dewey, worked for rig owner Transocean Ltd. and was among the 11 killed when BP PLC's Macondo well blew out and triggered an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, doesn't have anything to gain financially from the trial. She wants an apology from the oil giant, something she said she hasn't received yet, even though she settled her claims against BP last year.

"I've never heard a word from them," said Revette, 48, of State Line, Mississippi. "But an apology isn't going to bring my husband back."

From the beginning of the disaster, many relatives of workers who died on the rig have felt that their tragic losses were unjustly overshadowed by corporate finger-pointing, legal wrangling, and concerns about the spill's environmental and economic impact along the Gulf Coast.

"Nobody cares about the 11 men who died," said Arleen Weise, 58, of Yorktown, Texas, whose 24-year-old son, Adam Weise, was killed in the blast. "Did everybody have to forget about those men?"

A BP spokesman said the company has expressed its sympathies to the victims' families from the outset. In a press release less than a week after the explosion, former BP CEO Tony Hayward said: "We owe a lot to everyone who works on offshore facilities around the world and no words can express the sorrow and pain when such a tragic incident happens."

Chris Jones, whose brother, Gordon, was also killed on the rig, had planned to drive in from Baton Rouge with other relatives to attend the start of the trial. He said he has mixed feelings about the prospect of a settlement that would eliminate the need for a trial. Jones said he would be disappointed if BP manages to "write a check to solve their problems."

"I was ready to go to trial and see their feet held close to the fire," he said Sunday after learning of the postponement. "It seems like the easy way out to pay whatever the plaintiffs are willing to take."

Jones, an attorney, said he's not surprised that the oil giant would seek to avoid a long, costly trial.

"I know that is part of the game, so to speak," he said. "As long as they're paying a lot of money for the damage they caused, it would give me some relief."

The decisions and actions that led to the explosion and spill already have been painstakingly investigated by the Coast Guard, federal regulators and a presidential commission. Their probes concluded that BP, Transocean and Halliburton deserve to share the blame for a string of risky decisions that were designed to save time and money.

Transocean spokesman Lou Colasuonno wouldn't comment on whether the company, which owned the Deepwater Horizon rig, was participating in settlement talks.

"This deal does not change the facts of the case and Transocean is fully prepared to go to trial," he said of BP's settlement talks with the plaintiffs.

The massive scope of the case ? a maze of claims and counterclaims between the companies, federal and state governments and plaintiffs' attorneys ? has elicited comparisons to the tobacco litigation of the 1990s.

Roughly 340 plaintiffs' lawyers have worked on the case. BP has spent millions of dollars on experts and law firms. More than 300 depositions have been taken. Millions of pages of legal briefs have been filed. One Justice Department lawyer said it would take him 210 years to read all the pages submitted into the record if he read 1,000 pages a day.

Barbier, a former president of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association and appointee of President Bill Clinton, has a reputation for speedy but fair trials. He will hear and decide the case without a jury. Each trial phase is expected to last two to three months, with breaks in between. Even if all parties settle their claims before or during the trial, it could take several months for claims to be paid.

So this exists: Kickstarter for porn

13 hrs.

Pity the porn industry!

Once the chief driver of Internet innovation, porn long since ceded to the video game industry when it comes to influencing anything cutting edge. Now, the Internet's oldest profession, which gave us online payments, super speedy connections and pop-up windows (among other mixed blessings), finds itself cutting-and-pasting on the backs of others.?

Case in point, Offbeatr, "the first crowdfunding resource specifically designed for the adult industry," aka Kickstarter for porn. ?(Yes, the name. Let's just ... move on, shall we?)

Why does the adult industry need a crowdfunding platform??

If you really have to ask, the Offbeatr website explains:?

Raising money for an "adult" project even more difficult. Pair that together with easy access to "free porn" and it makes you wonder. Is there a real future for the adult industry?

Like Kickstarter, the Internet's most popular crowdfunding website, Offbeatr provides a platform for creators to present their projects. Supporters pledge money toward a designated goal, and are only charged if that goal is met. And that's not all:?

Offbeatr offers fans a way to directly support their favorite adult performers, studios and content makers. Supporters receive unique rewards offered by Creators. Supporters could visit a movie set or add executive producer to their resume. It all depends on the unique rewards Creators choose to offer.

Pinterest, the social sharing darling of 2012, already has a couple of adult content clones, including Pornterest. That name alone reminds us that the adult film industry still enjoys a long history of co-opting mainstream movie titles ? "Lust of the Mohicans" is the safest-for-work example, you get the picture. So really, the only question regarding Kickstarter's new adult analog Offbeatr is ? what was the hold up? ??

Pool and Snooker

Snooker and pool are very similar sports which both uses a stick known as cues to pocket balls that are colored differently. Those balls needs to be pocketed to six different holes on the sides and corners of the rectangular table. Both use the same thing but have different game style and collaborations of players. Yet it is noticeably one kind of sport that illustrates the modesty of a classic game and a rugged modern game of today.

Snooker without a doubt is a game originated from the heart of England and various parts of Europe. And in this present day, snooker has also gained recognition from different part of the world like America and Canada. Snooker is one of the classy game that requires it players to dress-up a bow-tie or a dinner suit to be formal while playing the game. The suit requirement tries to imply that you have to play the game with style and elegance amidst the difficulty of each game.

In snooker, 22 balls, including the white color striker ball, are used. The other colored balls are as follows: 15 red, 1 yellow, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink, 1 black and 1 green. There is a rack of red balls and also a rack of yellow ones, brown, green, pink, blue and black ball all numbered from 2-7. The main goal of the game is to begin to pocket one of the red balls then you continue by pocketing any one of the other colored balls. Once all of the red colored balls are gone, all the other colored balls get shot in their point order, start with the yellow first, and the black ball the last. The player with the most points wins the game. Sounds easy but before you get the chance to execute it gracefully you should be in constant practice.

Pool is a game of many variations but generally there is a rack of balls, half of the balls are with stripes, and the other half has solid colors. Once you have sunk one ball (say a solid colored ball) then you have to shot only solid colors until you are all the way through, at which time you can shoot the 9 ball, the ball that is common to both teams and essential to win. And pool players are not dressed up properly like the snooker players who have to wear classic and elegant suits. Pool players choose to wear comfortable clothing like polo shirts or even summer polo would do. As long as the get-up makes them comfortable while playing it doesn?t really matter. What matters the most is that they could be able to deliver the kind of game their audiences are expecting and of course it is highly regarded if a player win the game because he wins and take home the prize!

Flush With Tax Return Cash? Spend It Wisely On These Five Home ...

Is your tax return burning a hole in your pocket? It might be time to tackle that home improvement project you?ve been postponing.

Upgrading your space is a great way to spend the extra cash from Uncle Sam. You?ll enjoy a more beautiful and comfortable home, and at the same time boost the resale value of your property.

Of course, not all remodeling projects are equal when it comes to increasing resale value. Here are some of the projects that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Remodel Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of your home. It is a gathering place for family and a space for entertaining friends. And no home improvement project boosts resale value like a kitchen remodel.

If you can?t afford a major remodel, upgrading the kitchen cabinets is a great first project to tackle. Replace the cabinets entirely or save money by having them refaced or refinished. The latter completely transforms the look of your kitchen for a fraction of the price.

Remodel a Bathroom

Second to kitchens, a bathroom remodel is the best home improvement project for boosting resale value. When it?s time to sell your home, buyers will be looking for modern fixtures, plenty of storage and clever use of space.

A complete remodel can cost $10,000 or more, but you can start small here, too. Begin by paying attention to the most outdated features of the room. Replace that 1970s lime green bathtub with a modern tub/shower combo or swap that ugly laminate countertop for granite or quartz.

Build a Deck

Building a deck is a great way to expand your living space to the outdoors. Create an extra ?room? for relaxing, barbecuing, and entertaining family and friends.

The best part about building a deck is the return on investment. Even if you sell within a year, you?re likely to recoup most of the cost in the sale price.

Hire a Landscaper

Never underestimate the power of curb appeal. Your home might be beautiful on the inside, but if the lawn is ragged and unkempt, buyers will look elsewhere. Even if you?re not planning to sell, who wants to be known as the neighborhood eyesore?

Many people are surprised to learn that a complete landscaping project can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Start by hiring a professional to design a landscaping plan based on your needs and budget. Then you can tackle that plan in stages as money allows. Basic, naturalistic garden landscaping begins at about $12 per square foot.

Check out this MSN Real estate article for more ideas on how to save money on landscaping projects.

Replace Your Floors

Replacing your floors is yet another great way to transform the look of your home. Maybe the carpet in your living room is old and dirty or the vinyl floors in your kitchen are falling apart.

Replacing old carpet or vinyl with hardwood offers the best bang for your buck when it comes to resale value. If you can?t afford to do the whole house, start with just one room ? perhaps the kitchen. Or, look into lower cost flooring options such as bamboo or laminate.

Skin cancer frequency in chronic leg ulcers >10 percent

To investigate the frequency of skin cancers associated with CLUs, Patricia Senet, M.D., of Universit? Paris X, and colleagues studied 144 ambulatory or hospitalized patients with 154 CLUs attributed to venous and/or peripheral arterial disease(s), with increasing wound size (area and/or depth), despite receiving appropriate standard treatment for at least three months. Upon inclusion in the study, at least two 6-mm punch biopsies (one at the wound edge and one in the wound bed) were systematically performed.

The researchers found that the overall frequency of skin cancer in the CLUs was 10.4 percent; with nine squamous cell carcinomas, five basal cell carcinomas, one melanoma, and one leiomyosarcoma. More than half (56.3 percent) had persisted for at least three years. Older age, abnormal excessive granulation tissue at the wound edges, high clinical suspicion of cancer, and number of biopsies were significantly associated with skin cancer on univariate analysis. Neither wound area or duration, were significantly associated with skin cancer.

"The combined primary ulcerated cancer or malignant transformation frequency was sufficiently high in CLUs referred to tertiary care centers to consider systematic biopsy of a wound refractory to three months or more of appropriate treatment," write the authors.

Several authors disclosed financial ties to Urgo Medical, which partially funded the study.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Two Marine Corps helicopters collided over a remote section of the California desert during a nighttime exercise, killing seven Marines in one of the Corps' deadliest training accidents in years.

There were no survivors in the latest in a series of crashes involving troops from Camp Pendleton, officials said Thursday.

Two Marines were aboard an AH-1W Cobra and the rest were in a UH-1 Huey utility helicopter when the crash occurred Wednesday night near the Chocolate Mountains along the California-Arizona border, said Lt. Maureen Dooley with Miramar Air Base in San Diego.

Six of the victims were from Camp Pendleton ? the largest base on the West Coast ? and one was from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. Their identities will not be released until their families have all been notified.

Officials were still scrambling after sunrise to gather evidence at the crash site in a remote section of the Yuma Training Range Complex.

The sprawling 1.2 million-acre range in Arizona and southeastern California is favored by the U.S. military and its allies for training because the hot, dusty conditions and craggy mountains replicate Afghanistan's harsh environment and the clear weather allows for constant flying.

It was the fifth time since March that Marine Corps aircraft have crashed during a training exercise in California. In the past five years, there have only been two other aviation training accidents in the Navy and Marine Corp involving seven or more deaths, according to the Navy.

Retired Marine Col. J.F. Joseph, an aviation safety consultant, said Marine aviators are always at risk as they train to become combat ready.

"It's an unfortunate consequence of the high tempo of operations," he said. "They're out there working on the edge trying to exploit the maximum capabilities of the aircraft and their tactics. Just by the virtue of that, in becoming combat ready, these unfortunately are not uncommon occurrences."

The Marine Corps and Navy, nonetheless, stand out in their efforts to mitigate that risk and make training as safe as possible, he said.

The weather was mild on Wednesday when the helicopters were flying as part of a two-week standard training called "Scorpion Fire" that involved a squadron of about 450 troops from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The wing has about 17,500 Marines and sailors, including six helicopter squadrons that fly both Cobras and Hueys. It's headquartered at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station and also has personnel stationed at Camp Pendleton and Yuma.

The helicopters collided at 8:45 p.m. near dunes at the edge of the Yuma range. Ground troops were in the area, but they were not affected, said Gunnery Sgt. Dustin Dunk, a spokesman at Marine Corp Air Station Yuma. The station is about an hour and a half drive from the accident site.

Part of the exercise involved having helicopters low on fuel descend to ground troops that have set up a refueling outpost, Dunk said.

He did not know if that's what the pilots were doing at the time of the crash, which occurred about an hour before the range was to shut down for the evening.

"Our training is always evolving, safety is paramount, and being prepared is paramount," he said. "It was a very standard exercise for what we do. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family members ... Our investigation will look to see what went wrong and how to correct it."

The AH-1W carries a crew of two ? a pilot and gunner ? and is considered the Marine Corps' main attack helicopter. The UH-1Y, which is replacing the aging version of the Huey utility helicopter first used during the Vietnam War, carries a crew of one or two pilots, a crew chief and other crew members, depending on the mission.

Hueys often are used to pick up and drop off ground crews, while Cobras hover by ready to fire if the Huey comes under attack.

In other crashes in the past year, a twin-engine, two-seat AH-1W Cobra helicopter went down in September during training in a remote area of Camp Pendleton, killing two Marine pilots and igniting a brush fire that burned about 120 acres at the base north of San Diego.

In August, two Marines were ejected from their F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet as it plunged toward the Pacific Ocean. The two Marines spent four hours in the dark, chilly ocean before they were rescued. Both suffered broken bones but survived.

In July, a decorated Marine from western New York was killed during a training exercise when his UH-1Y helicopter went down in a remote section of Camp Pendleton.

Another Hornet sustained at least $1 million damage when its engine caught fire on March 30 aboard the USS John C. Stennis during a training exercise about 100 miles off the San Diego coast. Eight sailors, a Marine and two civilians were injured.

A decade ago, in February 2002, a helicopter crash in the Chocolate Mountains California killed two Camp Pendleton Marines and injured two others. The UH-1N Huey was on a routine training mission in the Naval gunnery range.

Why No Loan Home Improvements Are Possible On Any Budget ...

Instead of taking out a home loan, which is usually what you do when you do home improvements, there are ways to go around this. If some improvements are necessary at your house, feel relieved that it will not require a lot of work to accomplish them. Sometimes simple things like cleaning, straightening, painting and decluttering can help you improve the look, feel and performance of your home that dont cost a lot of money. Just look around ? more than likely you will find small things you can do to make your house a better without calling the bank. In this article we will talk about a few small things that you can do on your own.

New floors in your home? If you want them, you need to do a little planning. More than likely, you are envisioning thousands of dollars leaving your checkbook and contractors appearing at your doorstep. Now, mercifully, you can do this on your own without a contractor. Instead of getting hardwood flooring, you can get laminate flooring which looks virtually the same at half the price or less. Even if you have no experience, you can do this on your own. When you use this flooring, you will see how easy it is to install. The best option for anyone that has little experience is to go do a home improvement store for material and advice.

Do you have hardwood or tile floors? Using carpet, instead of a hardwood floor, might be better for your home. Perhaps you have a lot of carpet in your home. Putting in hardwood or tile flooring might be a better option. If you have a large home, it could take several days; if you have a small home, you could probably install the flooring on a weekend. Installing laminate flooring is just a matter of removing your carpet and laying the new flooring down. Carpeting is much more difficult than putting laminated flooring so you may want to stick with what is easier. Even though you are probably fully capable of getting this job done, talk to a professional before starting.

Another thing you can do is change your appliances. Find a home improvement store, see what is on sale, and replace what is affordable. New appliances usually come with warranties and insurance policies which is good. Many stores offer free installation and delivery for products that you buy from their store including appliances. It is amazing at how much switching out your refrigerator, range, dishwasher, sink, etc can help spruce up a room. Whats more, the newer machines usually use quite a lot less energy than the older models.

Instead of paying someone to do the work for you, no loan home improvements are done by you and not some contracted worker.

Most of the time the biggest cost of home improvement comes from hiring someone to do the work for you. It is possible to overspend so be careful before doing so. Do you really need to overhaul the entire front half of your house or will rearranging the furniture in your living room give you the satisfaction you are looking for? Instead of making a rash decision, give it some thought, and also determine how much money you want to spend.

So instead of hiring people to do your work, you simply do it yourself and save thousands of dollars in doing so. Costs also add up when your eyes get too big for your home. You must think to yourself whether it will be okay to rearrange furniture or to go all out and remodel one half of your house. There is no need to spend a ridiculous sum of money to make your house look better ? think about it thoroughly before you make any decision at all. Ex-judge in US defends forced abortion ruling

BOSTON (AP) ? A retired Massachusetts judge on Tuesday defended her decision to order a mentally ill woman to have an abortion and be sterilized against her wishes, and she blasted Boston University for rescinding a job offer after her ruling sparked controversy.

Christina Harms said she believes the schizophrenic woman would have chosen to have an abortion if she had been mentally competent. In her ruling, she granted a petition from the woman's parents to have their daughter declared incompetent and awarded guardianship to them for the purpose of consenting to the abortion.

Harms' ruling drew spirited debate among bloggers on both sides of the abortion issue. Her written ruling remains sealed under family court rules, but the gist of it became public after the state Appeals Court overturned the decision on Jan. 17.

Now Harms has taken the unusual step of defending her decision publicly, both in media interviews and in a letter she sent Monday to other family court judges in Massachusetts. The Boston Globe newspaper first reported on the judge's letter.

Harms, who retired six days before the Appeals Court ruling, said a decision by Boston University's School of Law to back out of a job offer shortly after the Appeals Court overturned her ruling sends the wrong message about judicial independence.

"Being a judge is not like being a contestant on 'American Idol,' " Harms told The Associated Press on Tuesday, referring to the reality television show. "You are not looking for votes."

The woman has not been named; she was identified in court papers only as "Mary Moe."

Harms said many factors went into her decision in favor of the abortion, most importantly, concerns about the woman's health. She said the woman had been taken off some of her anti-psychotic drugs because the medications could have harmed the fetus. After hearing from the woman herself and from her parents, Harms said she found that the woman had severe delusions ? including her belief that she was not pregnant ? and was not competent to decide whether to have an abortion. Harms said she also found that the woman, if she had been mentally competent, would have chosen an abortion to protect her own well-being.

"I viewed the interruption of Mary's full medical regimen as potentially life-threatening. If Mary understood this, which my observation of her behavior, demeanor, and responses indicated that she did not, I believed then, as I do now, that she would elect to abort the pregnancy in order to protect her own well-being," Harms wrote in her letter to her former colleagues on the bench.

Harms said she had been negotiating with BU's law school since August about a newly created position where she would help the school in its efforts to increase the number of judicial clerkships and internships offered to its law students. On Jan. 17 ? the day the Appeals Court ruled ? she said she received an email from a BU official asking her to send a short biography and photo to introduce her to the law school community. Three days later, after a media flurry about her ruling, she said she got an email from the school canceling an appointment she had to fill out paperwork for the job.

BU says it never made a formal job offer to Harms, but it acknowledges that the controversy created by her ruling contributed to the decision to take her out of the running for the job.

In a letter to Harms' lawyer, BU's deputy general counsel, Erika Geetter, said that it was not disagreement with the content of the judge's ruling that caused the school not to move forward on the job. Geetter said the job was a position that would require Harms to do marketing within the school and the legal community.

Harms said she believes the school would not have made the decision if her ruling had involved an issue other than abortion.

In overturning Harms' decision, the Appeals Court used unusually strong language.

The court said no one had requested sterilization and said Harms "appears to have simply produced the requirement out of thin air."

Harms said she based her sterilization order on concerns that the woman had had two previous pregnancies and would continue to have unprotected sex, unplanned pregnancies and therefore "serial abortions." The woman had aborted one of her earlier pregnancies. Her parents are raising a child she gave birth to from the other pregnancy.

"I frankly felt it would be cowardly for me not to address it," Harms said Tuesday.

Retired Appeals Court Judge Rudolph Kass called the decision by BU "unfortunate."

"You don't want judges sniffing at the winds to see what's popular," Kass said. "They should be trying to do what's right in the circumstances."

Canadian Business Financing: Understand Your Asset Finance ...

Making The Asset Financing Decision An Easy One

Information on asset finance and the leasing versus buying questions faced by business owners in the search for financing of capital assets via equipment finance .

Leasing versus buying. It's one of the classic questions faced by business owners and financial managers when they are looking for asset financing strategies that make sense in capital acquisition of business assets.

Let's examine how you as a business owner or finance manager can make the right decisions when you are at the proverbial fork in the road, the classic ? lease vs. buy ' scenario.

Part of the reason we're intrigued by this subject is simply the fact that there is so much misinformation around there, in some cases it's just an issue of not knowing what questions to ask.

Your firms ability to invest in new equipment whether its plant or office assets, or even telecom and computing needs typically brings you to the decision point to lease versus buy. You know that with these new assets your firm can most often become more productive and profitable.

The reality is, we think, is that it's as important a decision on buying and financing those assets as it probably was as to which asset to purchase, from which vendor, and at what price.

Your ability to match the right amount of financing capital with the use and term of the asset should be key to your decision.

The term lease itself, as simple as it might seem, is actually part of the confusion around the leasing versus buying decision. Many business owners think that there is always an ultimate obligation to return the asset at the end of the lease term - similar to the consumer leasing an auto. That is categorically not the case.

In reality you have the basic choice of entering into two types of leases in the Canadian business leasing industry - a capital lease or an operating lease. The capital lease is a basic lease to own scenario, no obligations there. Other than to make your payments! The operating lease gives you the right to return the asset if you choose, but it is not an obligation, it?s actually one of three choices you have under the operating ' fair market value ' lease. You can return, extend, or buy the asset.

The beauty of the operating lease is that it gives you all sorts of flexibility, has a lower monthly payment, and puts you in charge of the final asset several years down the road at the end of the lease term. This type of lease is perfectly suited for telecom and computing assets.

Many business owners and finance manager are often confused about their dealings with lease companies. We can commiserate with that , because its a question of which firm to deal with, what are their credit policies, which assets do they prefer or not prefer to finance, and are they easy to do business with when it comes to documentation and ongoing correspondence and relations during the term of the lease .

It's at this time when it might be best to focus on working with an expert who already has the knowledge and relations within the industry to best serve representing your needs.

We continually encourage clients to view a lease financing and asset finance company in the context of developing a long term relationship. The right type of firm will actually help you put together one Master lease and set up a lease line of credit, allowing you to quickly and efficiently add on assets at any time with minimum work. Bottom line, it?s not complex.

The key benefits of leasing, versus buying always stay the same. There are tax advantages, preservation of capital, and minimum down payments and certainly usually no outside collateral required. The asset being financed is the collateral!

Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor on the asset finance capital strategy that works best for your firm - and trust us, its not as complicated as you think!

Health Insurance And You: What You Should Know ? Cars and ...

Why is it that so many people are so unhappy with their health insurance. There are many reasons for this, but the most common reason is because they did not do their homework in order to get reliable health insurance. The information in the following article will help you to not make health insurance mistakes.

Pay attention to the cost of your health insurance. You can find calculators online that will help you compare the costs of different types of health insurance. If you are generally healthy and still young, you may not need such a large coverage compared to someone who?s health is not that great.

Make sure what state laws and regulations are in place where you live. This could provide you with great information to use when seeking a health insurance policy. You may find that there are restrictions on the disqualifying factors that insurance providers are able to use when evaluating your case, helping you in various situations.

If you are a student and are generally healthy, pick an inexpensive plan with a high deductible amount. Chances are with your risk levels, you won?t be needing to visit the doctor very often. The main reason for you to have insurance is to protect you in case of major illness or accidents that require hospitalization.

If your looking into personal health insurance some companies will let you take a ?free look? or a ?test drive? of the coverage. What this means is that you would have a certain amount of time to actually try out the insurance that way you will fully understand the coverage. Within that certain period of time if you are not satisfied you can get a full refund.

Before re-enrolling, when your plan is about to expire, look for any changes you need to make. Evaluate how your insurance has worked for you and the costs you?ve incurred and make the changes you need to make before you enroll again. If necessary, consider changing your health insurance altogether.

If you?re self-employed, don?t forget that your health insurance costs can be tax deductible! Your insurance premiums should be considered as an above-the-line deduction, which means that they?ll lower your gross income on insurance forms. Getting the money you put into your insurance back in your tax return can be a big benefit to your finances.

Consider the pros and cons of the different types of health insurance plans that are available. You will need to research Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Point of Service (POS), Health Savings Account (HSA) and traditional indemnity. Find as much information as possible about each kind before enrolling into the program.

As was stated in the beginning of the article, the main reason for people not being happy with their health insurance is because they are not educated on the subject. In the above article, you were given information that will improve your health insurance knowledge and hopefully help you to get the best coverage policy. We only wanted to give you a taste of what can be found on this subject.

Best health insurance is an area that contains many nuances and more specialized types of information. You will find that the more you learn, the more you will be in a position to get the most from your efforts. It can possibly seem overwhelming at first, but when you discover the right information you will see that it is not as difficult as you thought.

It doesn?t matter how much you feel you are knowledgeable about Colonial health insurance and even on Health insurance for unemployed, see this wonderful site to be entertained with truly insightful information.

Real Estate Investing F?r Beginners
M? advice f?r investors th?t ?r? ???t beginning ?n real estate, partner w?th ?th?r investors! I h??? ?ft?n referred t? ?? real estate investing ?? being a team sport. Th? reality ?? ??? ??n find multiple moving ??rt? ?n ?n? real estate deal, ?? ?n a lot ?f cases different investors w?ll solve diverse challenges ?f a particular deal differently. Wh?n th?? happens (?n m? humble opinion) ?t? best t? work together ?nd split profits. Real Estate Investing F?r Beginners Point 1: 50% ?f something ?? far better th?n 100% ?f nothing. Th? hang up ?? th?t m??t investors ?r? n?t taught t? work together. F?r example: one n?w investor th?t recently talked w?th m? t?ld m? th?t h? h?d a couple ?f g??d buyer leads fr?m h?? BOISE, Idaho: Idaho House committee introduces tax relief bill ...

House lawmakers on Friday took the first step toward providing more than $35 million in tax relief to individuals, small businesses and corporations.

The House Revenue and Taxation Committee voted Friday to introduce legislation aimed at cutting the state's top individual income tax rate from 7.8 percent to 7.4 percent, a reduction that would save individual taxpayers and small business owners $30.9 million next year. The measure would also reduce the corporate income tax rate from 7.6 percent to 7.4 percent, saving some of Idaho's biggest companies an estimated $4.8 million.

The projected $35 million in tax relief falls short of the $45 million proposed by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter last month, but Otter and his staff worked with Republican leaders on the measure and are urging lawmakers to get behind it.

"This is a start," said House Majority Leader Mike Moyle, R-Star, the chief sponsor of the measure. "This sends a good message for the state of Idaho as we try to attract more businesses here ... and to get Idaho to be more competitive with surrounding states."

With Idaho's revenue picture improving, Republican lawmakers say they can afford to engage in serious debate about providing tax relief to individuals and businesses.

On Friday, legislative budget writers approved revenue targets for fiscal year 2013 that slightly undercut Otter's forecast. The Joint Finance Appropriations Committee agreed on a 4.5 percent increase in revenue in 2013 compared with 2012 and projected total state revenue at $2.6 billion, up from the $2.55 billion in 2012 yet $33.3 million less than Otter's total revenue projection for the coming fiscal year.

Rep. Dennis Lake, chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee, said the $35 million target sought in the tax relief bill for now reflects a more cautious approach to the state's overall revenue picture. Other tax relief measures could emerge in the coming weeks, Lake and Moyle said.

Lake also said lawmakers face a challenge balancing tax relief with some other priorities spelled out by Otter and legislative leaders, including restoring money to teachers' salaries and offering pay raises to state workers.

"Tax relief should be the last decision we make, not the first," Lake said after the committee's voice vote.

Reducing the top individual rate to 7.4 percent would cut the tax rates for 19 percent of all taxpayers who file jointly, according to figures from the Division of Financial Management. The reduction would also lower taxes for 16 percent of those who file individual returns, which includes the majority of Idaho's smaller businesses, according to DFM.

Compared to neighboring states, Idaho's top individual income tax and corporate income tax rates are higher than Montana's and Utah's. Wyoming and Nevada do not tax in those categories.

Alex LaBeau, the top lobbyist at the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry, said the $35 million in proposed tax relief marks a good point to begin a broader discussion about reforming Idaho's tax policy.

LaBeau, and the industry and business leaders he represents, contend the best way to stimulate economic development in the state is to wipe the personal property tax on businesses off the books. Earlier this month, LaBeau told a joint panel of the House and Senate tax committees that the $130 million personal property tax on business equipment has been a drag on economic growth and job creation.

"This starts the discussion," LaBeau said. "This represents $35 million worth of help."
