Walter J. Zable (far right) poses with (from left) former President Paul Verkuil, Zable's wife, Betty, and former Rector Hays Watkins.

In 1935, the College of William and Mary played its inaugural football game at its newly dedicated Cary Field stadium, battling the University of Virginia to a 0-0 tie.

Walter Joseph Zable, who would earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from William and Mary in 1937, played in that game.

Mr. Zable, who turned down a scholarship from Harvard University to accept one in Williamsburg, became an honorable mention All-American in football and lettered in baseball, basketball and track. He later played for the Richmond Arrows.

William and Mary is where he met Betty Virginia Carter, a 1940 alumna he married while he was still in school.

Staunch school supporters, the Zables gave their alma mater $10 million in 1990, which prompted the board of visitors to rename the football and track and field venue Zable Stadium at Cary Field.

Williamsburg and Tribe athletics remained close to Mr. Zable's heart until he died Saturday at 97 in a San Diego hospital.

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.

"Every college and university has a few graduates who are larger than life, whose accomplishments are simply extraordinary, and whose loyalty to their alma mater is the stuff of legend," said W. Taylor Reveley III, president of William and Mary.

"Walt Zable was such an alumnus at the College of William and Mary. He was deeply devoted to William and Mary -- one of those alumni for whom lifelong ties to his alma mater meant a lot to him.

"He was particularly generous in annual giving ? the lifeblood of the college operating budget.

"The last time I saw him at the college and had him to lunch, we drove around in a golf cart. He was extremely interested in seeing all the new construction, especially the athletic facilities."

Bobby Dwyer, senior associate athletic director for development at the school, noted that "whether it was giving for scholarships, facilities, endowments, whatever ? he was always there. And he was so generous that he inspired others to give."

At his death, Mr. Zable, who was founder and still president, CEO and chairman of Cubic Corp., was the oldest chief executive of any publicly traded company.

A Los Angeles native, he grew up in Boston, where a crystal set ignited a lifelong interest in electronics. He returned during the early 1940s to California, where he started a microwave technology business in his garage. He moved his business to Point Loma, Calif., where Cubic debuted its first profitable product in 1951 ? a device that measured the power of microwaves.

Cubic was a pioneer in postwar electronics, developing products like automatic elevators, electronic sports scoreboards and electronic voting equipment. It also had made distance-measuring devices that revolutionized offshore activities such as oil drilling and laying pipe.

The San Diego-based engineering and technology business, which employs more than 7,800 workers and posted revenue last year of $1.28 billion, now is known as a defense contractor that supplies electronic flight and ground forces training systems to militaries, produces mission-support services to the Pentagon and makes automated fare payment equipment for some of the world's largest public transit systems.

Mr. Zable's wide philanthropic interests included California colleges and his community.

He had been a director of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 1981.

His wife died in 2007. Survivors include a son, Walter C. Zable of Del Mar, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Cox of Danville, Ky.; and five granddaughters.

?Miss Holocaust Survivor? crowned in Israel, stirring smiles and controversy
Grinning and waving, 14 women who survived the horrors of World War II paraded Thursday in an unusual pageant, vying for the honour of being crowned Israel?s first ?Miss Holocaust Survivor.?

Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive. (Photos: AFP/Getty Images)

Scientists develop a spray-on battery

23 hrs.

Scientists in the United States have developed a paint that can store and deliver electrical power just like a battery.?

Traditional lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics. They are already pretty compact but limited to rectangular or cylindrical blocks.

Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have come up with a technique to break down each element of the traditional battery and incorporate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any surface.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Pulickel Ajayan, who leads the team on the project.

The rechargeable battery is made from spray-painted layers, with each representing the components of a traditional battery: two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.?

The paint layers were airbrushed onto ceramics, glass and stainless steel, and on diverse shapes such as the curved surface of a ceramic mug, to test how well they bond.

One limitation of the technology is in the use of difficult-to-handle liquid electrolytes and the need for a dry and oxygen-free environment when making the new device.?

The researchers are looking for components that would allow construction in the open air for a more efficient production process and greater commercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on the project, believes the technology could be integrated with solar cells to give any surface a stand-alone energy capture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the device using nine bathroom tiles coated with the paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes for six hours, providing a steady 2.4 volts.

The results of the study were published on Thursday in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.?

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Product Review: Wildflower Wishes App

Don't have time for a written greeting, and internet greetings seem impersonal?

I have an answer to your dilemma!

Some authors look forward to releasing an e-copy of their book, but Patti Callahan Henry was different, Instead of releasing the e-version of her novel?Coming Up For Air, she took her favorite part of?the book and turned it into it's own app! The first time this has been done!? In the story,?In a memory from her childhood, Ellie (the main character) overhears her mother call her a ?wildflower?, so she scatters wildflower seeds throughout her mother?s finely manicured rose garden, believing her mother must love the beauty and wild nature of these flowers. But when the wildflowers finally bloom, Ellie?s mother pulls them from the earth, telling her that they don?t belong. This destroys Ellie?s childlike heart. But as the adult Ellie discovers secrets from her mother?s own wild past after her death, and as love grows between Ellie and a man who cherishes her wild nature, Ellie reclaims the spirit of a ?wildflower?. the main character Ellie is dealing with her mother?s death and recalls her childhood nickname ?wildflower,??

The FREE?Wildflower Wishes?app lets users send virtual flowers with custom messages to their friends.?The app comes with five wildflower icons, and each hold a special meaning ("I?m sorry"," I love you", "Good luck"). ?Additional wildflowers ("sending encouragement", "don't forget me", "farewell", for example) can be purchased for $0.9. All can be sent to email, other WW friends or Facebook friends, along with a heartfelt personal message!

The app is really cool, and if you're friend/family member is into the meaning of flowers, they will really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

You can find?the QR code for the Wildflower Wishes App on the cover?of the newly released paperback edition of COMING UP FOR AIR?! Talk about new school technology meeting old school technology!

'Catching Fire': Jena Malone In Running To Play Johanna

Mia Wasikowska is reportedly no longer being considered for role in 'Hunger Games' sequel.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Fans of "The Hunger Games" have been keeping a close eye on two yet-to-be-cast roles in the upcoming sequel "Catching Fire" as the follow-up gets ready to move into production. Rumors about the part of Finnick Odair have floated around for months, but talk about who might be cast as Johanna Mason has only picked up this week.

The latest word on who might play the former champion for District 7 comes from Entertainment Weekly, which is reporting that Jena Malone is in the running for the role.

Last week, the first rumors about the role began to circulate. According to the Playlist, both Mia Wasikowska and model Zoe Aggeliki were in the mix for Johanna. In its report about Malone, EW also confirmed that Wasikowska was neither in the running nor able to fit "Catching Fire" into her schedule.

Malone, who recently appeared in the wildly popular "Hatfields & McCoys" miniseries, is 27 years old, making her the appropriate age to play Johanna, who Katniss at one point describes as being like a big sister, albeit one who hates her.

Johanna is a master of manipulation. She won her first tournament by pretending to be weak and non-threatening until there were fewer tributes left in the arena. Seizing the opportunity, she revealed herself as a proficient killer. When she first meets Katniss in the arena, she memorably strips naked in order to make Jennifer Lawrence's character uncomfortable.

No new additions to the cast have been officially announced for the Francis Lawrence-directed sequel to this year's massive blockbuster. Lionsgate is not currently commenting on casting.

"Catching Fire" will open in theaters on November 22, 2013.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

Facebook changed the email address on your profile, here's how to fix it

22 hrs.

You may have heard (or read) that Facebook just changed your email address without even asking you?? and in a way it did?? but the whole thing's not quite as scary or dramatic as it might sound. And you can easily fix things with a few clicks.

Kashmir Hill of Forbes' Not-So Private Parts blog was among the first?to report on the change.?She labeled the whole thing as "Facebook's lame attempt to force its email service on you."

This all sounds scary! What happened?
You see, what happened is that the email address?? or in some cases, addresses?? displayed on your Facebook profile was changed?from whatever it was to your?Facebook email address. (Your Facebook email address consists of whatever is at the end of your Facebook URL slapped in front of @facebook.com. For example: My Facebook URL is http://facebook.com/rosa, so my Facebook email address is rosa@facebook.com.)

For most people, this is pretty darn annoying as all the mail they receive at the Facebook email address winds up in their regular Facebook inbox. Based on a quick survey of friends and colleagues, it seems that this is inconvenient to a majority, as they prefer to receive their email in?... you know, their actual email inboxes.

Now that you understand the somewhat bad news better, here are two good pieces of news:?Facebook didn't alter the default address on your account, meaning that the social network's whacky system only altered what is visible on your profile. And you can change your profile back to normal pretty easily.

Whew! So how do I fix this?
All you have to do is open up your profile page (hit the "About" button under your personal info), scroll down to the "Contact Info" box, and hit the "Edit" button. There you can toggle who can see which email address and whether it is displayed on your Timeline or not.?

If you're not a fan of receiving your email in your Facebook inbox, I suggest hiding that address and simply making the one you favor visible.

Why did this all happen?
We reached out to Facebook in an attempt to figure out what happened and why the email addresses on people's profiles were suddenly changed. A spokesperson for the social network offered the following response:

As we announced back in April, we?ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site.

In addition to everyone receiving an address, we?re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.

Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we?re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.

The spokesperson did not explain why users did not receive any sort of notice when their profiles started displaying a different email address, even though we made sure to ask about that.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Cheaper cell phones with better signal quality: World's most powerful nanoscale microwave oscillators developed

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A team of UCLA researchers has created the most powerful high-performance nanoscale microwave oscillators in the world, a development that could lead to cheaper, more energy-efficient mobile communication devices that deliver much better signal quality.

Today's cell phones, WiFi-enabled tablets and other electronic gadgets all use microwave oscillators, tiny devices that generate the electrical signals used in communications. In a cell phone, for example, the transmitter and receiver circuits contain oscillators that produce radio-frequency signals, which are then converted by the phone's antenna into incoming and outgoing electromagnetic waves.

Current oscillators are silicon-based and use the charge of an electron to create microwaves. The UCLA-developed oscillators, however, utilize the spin of an electron, as in the case of magnetism, and carry several orders-of-magnitude advantages over the oscillators commonly in use today.

UCLA's electron spin-based oscillators grew out of research at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This research focused on STT-RAM, or spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random access memory, which has great potential over other types of memory in terms of both speed and power efficiency.

"We realized that the layered nanoscale structures that make STT-RAM such a great candidate for memory could also be developed for microwave oscillators for communications," said principal investigator and research co-author Kang L. Wang, UCLA Engineering's Raytheon Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the Western Institute of Nanoelectronics (WIN).

The structures, called spin-transfer nano-oscillators, or STNOs, are composed of two distinct magnetic layers. One layer has a fixed magnetic polar direction, while the other layer's magnetic direction can be manipulated to gyrate by passing an electric current through it. This allows the structure to produce very precise oscillating microwaves.

"Previously, there had been no demonstration of a spin-transfer oscillator with sufficiently high output power and simultaneously good signal quality, which are the two main metrics of an oscillator -- hence preventing practical applications," said co-author Pedram Khalili, project manager for the UCLA-DARPA research programs in STT-RAM and non-volatile logic. "We have realized both these requirements in a single structure."

The SNTO was tested to show a record-high output power of close to 1 micro-watt, with a record narrow signal linewidth of 25 megahertz. Output power refers to the strength of the signal, and 1 micro-watt is the desired level for STNOs to be practical for applications. Also, a narrow signal linewidth corresponds to a higher quality signal at a given frequency. This means less noise and interference, for a cleaner voice and video signal. It also means more users can be accommodated onto a given frequency band.

In addition, the new nanoscale system is about 10,000-times smaller than the silicon-based oscillators used today. The nano-oscillators can easily be incorporated into existing integrated circuits (computer chips), as they are compatible with current design and manufacturing standards in the computer and electronic device industries. And the oscillators can be used in both analog (voice) and digital (data) communications, which means smart phones could take full advantage of them.

"For the past decade, we have been working to realize a new paradigm in nanoelectronics and nanoarchitectures," said Wang, who is also a member of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. "This has led to tremendous progress in memory research. And along those same lines, we believe these new STNOs are excellent candidates to succeed today's oscillators."

8 Ways to Avoid Relationship Disasters on Facebook | 93.1 WZAK

By Dawn Papandrea

man on computer with woman in backgroundHere?s a stat to dislike: Nearly one-third of divorce filings in 2011 mentioned the word Facebook, according to a survey from Divorce-Online, a British legal service. ?You can?t blame Facebook for divorce, but it will exploit cracks that are already there,? says Charles J. Orlando, relationship expert and author of The Problem with Women? is Men. So does using Facebook doom your marriage? Hardly. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg?s status recently went from single to married. Before your marital status takes a turn toward ?It?s complicated,? try these expert strategies to protect your relationship. Photo credit: Thinkstock

1. Go beyond just being friends with your spouse.

Befriending your spouse and sharing your relationship status on Facebook are no-brainers, but go one step further, suggests Julie Spira, author of The Rules of Netiquette: How to Mind Your Manners on the Web . ?Both you and your spouse should be digitally proud of your marriage. So post your anniversary dinner photo together or a picture from a recent vacation,? she says. Orlando agrees, adding that not mentioning your husband is the online equivalent of not wearing your wedding band.

2. Consider sharing passwords.

Elizabeth Hanes of Albuquerque, NM, says she and her husband, Lee, know each other?s logins to everything, but not so they can snoop on each other. ?It shows that neither of us have anything to hide,? she says. It?s also practical. ?Once, a friend posted something inappropriate to Lee?s wall, but he couldn?t access Facebook from work so he asked me to delete the post for him,? she says.

That?s not to say that exchanging passwords is a must. ?Everyone needs personal space, both online and offline,? says Spira. ?While you might share a toothbrush, a little privacy and mystery is good for a marriage.? So even if you know each other?s logins, you should feel like you never have to use it.

3. Don?t be friends with exes.

People rarely have pure intentions when they seek out exes, says Orlando. His simple advice: ?Defriend, disassociate, disengage.? That?s because the protection of the Internet allows for more forward conversation, points out Karen Sherman, PhD, relationship specialist and author of Marriage Magic! Find It, Keep It and Make It Last.
?

Seeing what an old friend is up to, though, is part of the fun of Facebook, she adds. But-and here?s the important part-only if your partner is okay with it. If you know your spouse would be upset to see an old flame on your friends list, ignoring or rejecting a friend request is the right move. On the flipside, if you?re uncomfortable that your husband is friends with an ex, bring up the subject. ?Let him explain why they?re friends,? recommends Spira. ?Chances are, it?s not a big deal to him to add her to his many friends from the past.?

4. Avoid airing your dirty laundry.

Too many couples overshare their spats on Facebook, says Spira, ?and your friends don?t want to see the drama in your marriage.? Remember, posting about how your hubby annoyed you is like putting it on a neighborhood billboard.

Even when your intentions are innocent, posting about your partner can hurt feelings, as *Barbara of St. Paul, MN, found out. Her husband dropped off their son late to a birthday party. The birthday boy?s mom made a passive aggressive remark on Facebook about people not arriving on time, and Barbara apologized for her husband who slipped up on ?daddy duty.? ?*Steve didn?t like that he was made to look irresponsible when he was late because the place was hard to find,? she explains. ?Now I only post positive stuff about my husband,? she says.

5. Set rules together.

Your page may be your own, but you have to respect your mate, says Dr. Sherman. ?Be aware of one another?s sensitivities,? she advises. For instance, maybe you?re not thrilled that your husband is posting vacation photos of you in your bikini. Or he doesn?t like when you tag him in posts that share a strong political view. Discuss posting no-nos to avoid future conflicts.

6. Support each other online, but don?t let it replace how you communicate.

If you and your spouse gush about each other online, but then barely have a conversation when you?re in the same room, make an effort to connect IRL (in real life, that is!). ?People show their love in different ways. Some men talk, some men write. But never let anything substitute a real connection in your relationship,? says Orlando.

On a related note, it?s easy to get swept up in your logged-on life that you prioritize it over your marriage, says Orlando. ?It?s a common relationship infraction, but you have to learn balance so you don?t end up losing connection with the people you care about most,? he says. He suggests designating tech-free times in your home, whether it?s during dinner, after 8 p.m. or every Sunday.

7. Don?t post anything that can be misinterpreted.

?You can?t hear the sound of someone?s voice when reading a Facebook post,? reminds Spira. For this reason, err on the side of caution with your posts, especially when communicating with members of the opposite sex. A harmless remark can sound anything but. For instance, refrain from posting that a male coworker was ?great last night.? You?d know you?re talking about his client dinner presentation, but that?s not how everyone else will take it.

Even when you tread carefully, a spouse?s reaction to a Facebook exchange might surprise you. *Rachel from Central PA shared an innocent exchange she?d had with a colleague. ?My husband was infuriated-and he?s not even the jealous type! He decided that the guy was pursuing me,? she says. Rachel realized from that incident that no one but the sender truly understands messages? context and that words easily can be misconstrued.

8. Ask and answer questions about Facebook friends.

If you notice your husband in the arms of another woman in a photo, it?s natural to draw a conclusion, admits Spira. But giving the benefit of the doubt is important in a trusting relationship. ?It could be a buddy?s sister who jumped in the photo, not the woman who wants to jump into bed with your husband,? she says. Always talk to your spouse in person about anything online that bugs you.

Try something like: ?I noticed a post from Jennifer on your wall, but I don?t remember you mentioning her. Can you tell me a little about her?? Be direct, and you won?t come across like you?re firing off accusations.

Tropical Storm Debby dumps wind, rain on Gulf

A powerful storm, the fourth named weather system of the season, is causing flooding and spawning twisters along the Gulf Coast. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

By NBC News and news services

Updated at 11:15 a.m. ET: A tropical storm warning was issued Sunday for Alabama to the Florida Panhandle as Debby lashed parts of the Gulf Coast with wind and rain.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday morning that Debby was about 190 miles (310 km) east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, about 140 miles (220 km) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla.

It said the storm warning has been extended eastward along the northwest coast of Florida to the Suwanee River. A warning was alread in effect for?the coast of Louisiana from the mouth of the Pearl River westward to Morgan City (not including the city of New Orleans or Lake Pontchartrain) and the Mississippi-Alabama border eastward to the Suwannee River.

Debby's top sustained winds had increased to about 60 mph (95 kph). The storm was crawling along toward the northeast at?6 mph (9 kph).

Although a forecast track was still uncertain, the hurricane center said people from Texas to Florida should remain alert to Debby's movement.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down Saturday in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported. Heavy squalls pounded parts of that state.

Forecasters said Debby could be near hurricane strength by Monday night. Meanwhile, up to six inches of rain were possible along the coast, with isolated amounts possibly reaching 10 inches.

This Sunday image provided by NASA, shows a satellite view of Tropical Storm Debby as it nears the northern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.

It was the first time four tropical storms have been recorded before July 1 during the Atlantic hurricane season since record keeping began in 1851. Alberto was the first storm this year. It formed off the South Carolina coast on May 19, almost two weeks before the hurricane season officially began June 1.

Debby forced the suspension of 8 percent of the region's oil and gas production.

The government reported that nine production platforms and one drilling rig were evacuated. The suspended crude production amounts to about 2 percent of U.S production and about 0.1 percent of global production. The reduced production is not expected to impact oil prices unless the storm strengthens and forces more production platforms to close.

A tropical storm warning was also in effect for part of the southeast Louisiana coast. Officials there have been monitoring the weather closely for the past several days. Some low-lying areas close to the coast flood easily in rough weather.

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

A tornado touched down in Collier County in southwest Florida and forecasters warned other twisters were possible.

Several homes were damaged and tree limbs were down, smashing atop at least two cars, The Naples Daily News reported.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center said of the twisters. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Out in the Gulf, Anadarko Petroleum removed all non-essential personnel and expected to close four facilities in the central and eastern Gulf. Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell and Marathon Oil said non-essential personnel were being removed but production was not being affected. ExxonMobil reported that its operations were unaffected.

Changing course for cancer - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ...

MDH_Pic.jpgSometimes life circumstances allow a change of course permitting us to refocus and do good things for good people.

When Haleigh was just 5 weeks old, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia but after a bone marrow biopsy, we found out it was actually Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

After five rounds of chemo, several rounds of infections and five months in the hospital, Haleigh went into remission. Haleigh, now a happy little girl, will be cancer-free five years in November.

Haleigh is not only my little miracle but an inspiration to my fianc? Derek Michel as well.

Wanting to do anything he could to help support Haleigh and patients like her, Derek turned a golf tournament that he and his brother started to reunite HS buddies into a fundraising event for LLS.

What developed was a letter donation campaign, an LLS booth set up at the tournament, solicitation of national and local sponsorships, raffles to raise funds, public relations with newspapers to spread the word for support, even a designated hole on the course so that players themselves could donate. Support is coming in along with five companies (and counting) donating pin prizes!

Derek and I love and admire Haleigh for what she has overcome. We feel honored to be able to give back to patients fighting blood cancers like Haleigh!!

?

- Megan Warren (Haleigh's Mom)

?

People like Megan, Derek and Haleigh inspire all of us to create new and selfless ways to support LLS.

LLS is funding lifesaving research as we make new discoveries everyday bringing us closer to cures for people just like Haleigh.

Wishing you the best of health,

Will Sandusky take the stand?

Jerry Sandusky's lawyers are leaning toward putting him on the stand in his own defense tomorrow, though the final decision has not yet been made, sources tell ABC News.

Sandusky would be called as the final witness for the defense, which is expected to rest its case on Wednesday. He is expected to deny that he ever had any sexual intent in his "horseplay" with the eight men who say they were sexually abused by him.

Prosecutor Joseph McGettigan, who has aggressively cross-examined defense witnesses this week, will have the opportunity to question Sandusky if they decide to put him on the stand.

Sandusky is charged with 51 counts of child sex abuse and could face life in prison if convicted.

His testimony could be a final chance for the defense, led by attorney Joseph Amendola, to place a reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors. The case is expected to go to the jury of seven women and five men following closing arguments on Thursday.

Sandusky's legal team had its strongest day yet today countering the claims of the eight accusers as Sandusky's wife, Dottie, took the stand in his defense, and helped poke holes in the accounts of two lead investigators in the case against him.

A poised Dottie Sandusky testified that she never saw anything sexual occur between her husband and any of his accusers.

Mrs. Sandusky, who winked at her husband as she took the stand, said in a soft voice that they will have been married for 46 years in September.

In a patient grandmotherly style, she described most of her husband's accusers as "very nice," but remembered some as "conniving" and "very clingy."

Sandusky, 68, is charged with 51 counts of sex abuse of 10 boys.

Dottie Sandusky bluntly denied the accusation of one accuser who told the court last week that during the Alamo Bowl she walked in on her husband trying to force the boy, now known as Victim 4, to perform oral sex on him. He claimed she interrupted her husband by asking, "What's going on in there?"

Mrs. Sandusky's version was quite different.

"I came in one day. It was like a bathroom and dressing area. They were standing there. I said 'what's going on' because Jerry was very upset and we had asked (Victim 4) if he wanted to go to a luncheon which was $50, and he said he'd really like to go. And Jerry said OK, and it was the day of the luncheon and (Victim 4) wouldn't go and Jerry knew I'd be very upset about spending the money."

Dottie Sandusky told the court room that nothing seemed inappropriate about the exchange.

"They were just standing in little hallways, they were fully clothed," she said.

Dottie Sandusky also rejected repeated testimony by the alleged victims that Jerry Sandusky would molest them at night in the family basement, an area they said his wife never went.

Mrs. Sandusky told the jury today that she and her husband had always shared a bed and that her husband would usually go to bed first. She also testified that she would often go down to the basement to get food out of a freezer there.

In response to the allegation from Victim 10 that he once yelled for help while being sexually abused in the basement while Dottie Sandusky was upstairs, Amendola asked whether someone on the ground floor would be able to hear someone yelling from the basement. "Yes," she responded and added that her hearing was very good.

She also described Victim 4, who testified powerfully about the sex abuse he allegedly endured, as "demanding, and he was very conniving, and he wanted his way and didn't listen a whole lot."

Jerry Sandusky Wife Comes to His Defense

Mrs. Sandusky did remember moments when she said the boys initiated affectionate contact with her husband.

"There was one time we were watching TV, and Jerry was in a La-Z-Boy, and (Victim 1) was on one couch. I was on another. And all of a sudden at a break he jumps up and runs and jumps in the chair with Jerry," she said.

She recalled being invited along with her husband by Victim 1's grandfather or mother to watch a wrestling match, and when they arrived, Victim 1 jumped up from a wrestling mat and ran "clear across the room and jumped up and hugged Jerry," she said.

She described Victim 1 as "very clingy to Jerry."

She said the other boys that she remembered coming to house who are now accusers were very nice.

Dottie Sandusky said that kids slept over the couple's house on one or two weekends a month during football season, and were given their choice of sleeping downstairs in the basement bedroom, in a ground floor bedroom, or in the second floor bedrooms if the couple's children were not home.

Prosecutor Joseph McGettigan, taking a softer tone with Dottie Sandusky than he had with earlier witnesses, asked if she believed that the accusers and Mike McQueary had any reason that she could think of to lie about these accusations.

"Would lie?" she asked. "I don't know what it would be for."

Earlier, Sandusky's defense concentrated on undermining the credibility of his accusers, suggesting they were partly motivated by the chance for a lucrative lawsuit.

The mother of Victim 1 was called to the stand and asked by Amendola whether she had ever expressed hope that by the end of the Sandusky case she would have "a big house in the country with a white fence where the dogs could run."

She said she had never said such a thing.

Amendola then called the woman's former next door neighbor who testified that she had said those exact words.

"Yeah she had said about when this all settles out she'll have a nice big house in the country with a fence and the dogs can run free," the man said, adding that Victim 1 had similar sentiments. "One statement he made was, 'When this is over I'll have a nice new Jeep.'"

Amendola also asked the woman about hiring a civil attorney, Michael Bonni, to represent her. The woman said that she had not paid Bonni, a Philadelphia-based civil attorney, but that she had signed some sort of payment agreement and did not know what it said.

She told Amendola she hired Bonni to protect her from the media, which had learned of Victim 1's name and address and were trying to find out more information about the case through him.

Amendola's defense team built up another part of their strategy during afternoon testimony as they called psychologist Elliot Atkins, who diagnosed Sandusky with histrionic personality disorder after reviewing his case and interviewing him. Reading from psychology text book material, Atkins explained that people who have HPD act out to get attention, act seductively, crave intimacy and affection, and can make people uncomfortable by "hugging with ardor."

He was called to testify about how Sandusky's condition may have influenced the letters that were presented as "creepy love letters" written to Victim 4 during the prosecution's testimony.

"The letters made me feel more confident about my diagnosis," Atkins said. "The book that I read that Mr. Sandusky coauthored absolutely confirmed in my mind this diagnosis was one thing, but when I read letters they made it much clearer that this was the diagnosis."

Dr. John O'Brien, a psychiatrist called by the prosecution, said that though two personality tests yielded a possible diagnosis of HPD, he also showed that Sandusky answered test questions in a way that would portray him in the best possible light.

Sandusky's legal team is trying to counter the powerfully emotional case presented by the prosecution last week that featured eight alleged victims describing, often through tears, how Sandusky allegedly showered them with attention and presents before aggressively sexually assaulting them.

Earlier today, Amendola contended that state troopers "tainted" the sex abuse investigation by prodding potential victims to say that sexual acts occurred between Sandusky and them and encouraged their confessions by saying that other young men had already described the abuse in detail.

Amendola asked two Pennsylvania state troopers whether the potential victims they interviewed at the beginning of the investigation ever said that nothing happened between them and Sandusky, and whether they later changed their stories to say that sexual abuse had occurred. Both investigators agreed that the men had changed their stories during the course of several interviews to provide detailed accounts of being molested or raped.

Amendola suggested that Trooper Scott Rossman and Corporal Joseph Leiter had elicited some of those changes by encouraging the men to say they were abused.

He asked whether the investigators remembered telling Victim 4 during an early interview that "nine other kids" had come forward and some of them had told investigators that oral sex and rape had occurred, according to a transcript from the interview.

Rossman and Leiter denied that they shared with their interviewees specific information about the number of other accusers or sex acts that alleged victims had told them, but Amendola then read a transcript from an interview with the man being identified as Victim 4.

In the interview, Leiter said, "I want to let you know that you are not the only victim... I think there were nine. We interviewed about nine.... You are repeating word for word pretty much that others told us. We know there is a well-defined progression in the way he operated.. Progression goes on for an extended period of time... oral sex..."

Amendola played a tape in which Leiter and Rossman say they are going to pause the recording device to take a break. Rossman and Victim 4 leave to get sodas, and Leiter and Victim 4's attorney, Ben Andreozzi, remain in the interview room with the recording device accidentally still recording.

The two discuss other allegations from alleged victims in the case, and then Andreozzi asks Leiter to share those allegations with his client so that Victim 4 can feel more comfortable talking about what happened to him.

Amendola asked the two investigators whether they had discussed their testimony with one another in the hallway. Rossman said they had not, while Leiter said they had.

He also asked the men whether they had turned off the tape recorder during interviews with other alleged victims and whether they were also told details of what other complainants had said.

Both men said under cross-examination by the prosecutor that they had not told alleged victims what to say or to embellish their stories.

They told the prosecutor that it was difficult to get many of the alleged victims to discuss the abuse. One, Leiter said, "curled up in the fetal position at the end of his couch" during questioning.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, closing his final foreign trip before the November election, sought to head home with fresh commitments Tuesday that Europe was racing toward a plan to keep its economic union afloat and its allies from being sucked into recession.

Leaders of the world's other established and emerging powers wanted something from Obama, too ? an assurance that the U.S. economy won't plunge into an abyss at year's end, when tax hikes and big spending cuts are due to kick in unless lawmakers and the White House cut a deal.

All sides at the Group of 20 summit seemed intent on sending confident signals to jittery markets and unhappy electorates. The European mess of high debt, high borrowing rates and high unemployment poses huge spillover risks to the American economy and Obama's political future.

Obama sent word through a spokesman that he was "encouraged" about Europe's path after the president met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Merkel proclaimed that the European Union nations were determined to solve the crisis through debt cutting, growth and cooperation.

"That reached very attentive ears here," Merkel said from the summit, held in this resort region along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Obama was immersed in a second day of talks before meeting separately with Chinese President Hu Jintao and holding a news conference. He was to be back in Washington early Wednesday, where a fierce re-election campaign and a slumping U.S. jobs market await him.

Despite the words of unity, European leaders showed signs that they have heard enough about their troubles, particularly from Americans. Memories linger of the 2008 financial crash that was borne in the United States and destroyed jobs and wealth.

"The eurozone has a serious problem, but it is certainly not the only imbalance in the world economy," Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti said Tuesday. He said the United States' own financial problems were mentioned in G-20 talks "by almost everybody, including President Obama."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso took an aggressive tone with reporters on Monday, also pointing some blame at North America and saying "Frankly we are not coming here to receive lessons in terms of democracy."

Europe's ability to turn around its fortunes fast will have direct bearing on whether Obama wins a second term. The bigger the drag from abroad, the harder the job growth in the United States.

Obama said all countries must contribute so "the economy grows, the situation stabilizes, confidence returns to the markets."

Although the foreign gatherings allow Obama to show off statesmanship, every day spent away from the United States and a direct focus on jobs in America quietly gives headaches to his campaign aides.

While Obama was in Mexico, his Republican competitor, Mitt Romney, was wrapping up a campaign bus tour through the heart of America.

Obama was spending much of Tuesday on the economic crisis after taking care of some unrelated diplomatic business ? his first meeting with Vladimir Putin since the former Russian president returned to the job this year. The leaders met for two hours Monday, in talks dominated by a bloody Syrian conflict that has deeply divided Russia and the U.S.

Central to the G-20 debate is how nations can boost jobs and consumer demand without sinking deeper into debt. Obama has implored governments to spend and grow, not just cut.

A draft of the leaders' final statement shows they want assurances that the United States won't take a deep plunge and drag them down as well.

The statement says the U.S. will "calibrate" its attempt to rein in debt and spending "by avoiding a sharp fiscal contraction in 2013."

That's a reference to a big threat to economic growth in the United States after the November election: the expiration of George W. Bush-era tax cuts and a scheduled round of automatic spending cuts that could send the nation back into a recession.

While the White House and lawmakers agree that they must act late this year or early next year to avoid such a "fiscal cliff," there is no path yet on how to avoid it.

Obama's political move has been to constantly show confidence in Europe's ability to solve its problems, but prod its leaders to move and chide them for not doing more sooner. Now, White House aides talk more positively about the direction of the debate, as they see it, toward the role of government in spurring economic growth.

"I think if you look at the shift in the focus, you'll see a very strong focus on supporting demand ... recognizing that economic conditions have deteriorated," said Lael Brainard, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for international affairs.

"This is very important to the Europeans in particular," she said. "And yes, we have heard it from German colleagues."
